Underlying Causes of World War I
With power comes great responsibility. If power is abused, consequences will come. In 1914 the world was tested as a great war began. On June 28, 1914 a Serbian from the group, The Black Hand, assassinated the Archduke of Austria. This began chaos and soon enough all of Europe was at war. So many things happened under the surface that led to the beginning of World War I. But what were these underlying causes? Three of the main underlying causes of World War I were alliances, militarism, and imperialism.
The first underlying cause of World War one was alliances. Two major alliances formed during the war. The Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. The Triple Entente consisted of the United Kingdom, Russia, and France. The Triple Alliance consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. Considering the countries of the Entente surrounded those in the Alliance, the Triple Alliance feared invasion. To make matters worse for the Alliance, Italy eventually would switch over to the Entente. Serbia aligned with the Entente because Austria blamed them for the assassination of their Archduke. All other countries put blame on each other until finally the war broke out.
Another underlying cause of World War I was militarism. Between the years of 1890 and 1914, the beginning of the war, the alliances military spends increased dramatically. The Triple Alliance went from spending forty million pounds to spending one hundred-fifty million pounds. The Triple Entente went from one hundred million to two hundred-twenty five million. Given that Britain is an island, most of the their spending went towards their navy. As the years progress towards the outbreak of war military budgets went sky high. Where are these countries going to use their new military purchases? They will soon use them for war.
The last underlying cause of World War I was imperialism. Many countries, such as Great Britain, took resources from other countries. This was just the start of British imperialism. Britain put a lot of money into their navy so they could travel to different countries and take resources. British colonies also had the most area. Therefore they had enough resources. Since they had a lot of area this meant their population was also high. They would send people into military work or into the labor force.
Although the assassination of the Archduke of Austria was the turning point for the start of the war, many underlying causes led to World War I. Alliances, militarism, and imperialism were the main underlying causes of World War I. These things led to the ultimate consequence, war.
